Lens metadata: what your glass says about you
LensModel, LensInfo, and LensSerialNumber all end up in your EXIF. Here's what they leak.
Lens metadata is written by the body when it can talk to the lens electronically. On a Sony body with a Sony G Master, you'll see the exact model ("FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II") and often the serial number.
For most photographers this is helpful — it lets you know which lens produced your best frames. For anyone trying to stay anonymous, it's another unique identifier. Third-party adapters and manual lenses generally don't write this data, which is one reason some photojournalists use adapted glass.
